Spring Garden Update
What a Spring it has been so far! March and April were supposed to mark the beginning of our weekly groups, and be a time where we all came together to plant out the seeds we have grown together. However, at the moment that is not what is happening. As sad as we are that you cannot all join us at the minute, we know that staying home and staying safe is the most important thing. Plants will still grow, and the garden will still bloom, and it will be ready for you all when this craziness all blows over.
I wanted to share everything that is happening in the garden, to stay connected with you all, so you can see all the hard work that you put in, and how it is paying off. I want to share the milestones, successes and disasters (there’s bound to be some!) that are happening along the way. So, enjoy! Feel free to contact us with any questions you have (gardening related, or not!), we will be happy to answer them the best we can.
The first main change in the garden has been the building of the raised beds. This has been a huge learning curve, as I don’t have much experience with drills and saws. Before we went into isolation, four of us gave it a go, with mixed results. Our first bed is a bit wonky and a bit wobbly, but we LOVE it! It shows a journey, and that’s what it’s all about, right?! We learnt something new together and it felt great! It has been a lot harder building the beds solo, but I’m definitely getting better. We’ve now got six growing beds, filled with lovely manure and compost, ready for the plant babies.
The first hardy plants have gone out into the garden too. These are the flowers that we sowed in the Autumn, and looked after over winter. These are varieties of plant that can handle a bit if cold, and by sowing them in the Autumn it means that you get much stronger plants, that will flower earlier in the season. Win-win! I have planted out Ammi Majus, Cornflowers, Daucus Carrotta, and Orlaya Grandiflora (I’ve put pictures of these below).
And I can’t believe that I haven’t mentioned the greenhouse yet! I actually think that guy warrants his own blog post… watch this space!
If there is anything you would like to see us write about on our blog, please leave a comment below.
Stay safe!
