Spring Bulbs to Plant in Autumn
Autumn in the cutting garden is always a strange time. The majority of the annuals are coming to an end, and the dahlias are clinging on until the first frost. However, it is the perfect time to be thinking ahead to Spring, and planting some bulbs in the ground. I remember planting the tulip bulbs last year with some volunteers on an open day. It was so wet and windy and it seemed odd to think that when those bulbs flowered the weather would be getting warmer and more welcoming again. Spring flowering bulbs are so special because they give us hope for the future and provide the first splash of colour in the new year. Not to mention that they are the easiest things to grow - just stick them in the ground and wait! The only things to look out for, is the wildlife. Your rows of beautifully planted tulips bulbs can quickly become an all-you-can-eat buffet for squirrels. You can always use things to deter them, like sprinkling chilli flakes on your soil, or covering with netting or wire.
I have put together a little grid to help you with some of your planting. We are going to be doing a whole series of posts about planting different flower bulbs, with some videos to go along side them. So keep a look out for those!
Let us know what you are planting, and make sure you share your journey with us! Happy planting!
